Despite the silly name, Amazon Prime Instant Video has impressed this year so far, with a wave of new additions that ranges from Inception to the first four seasons of Community. This month, it look to be pushing the bar higher, expanding its Disney collection – and snapping up one of the biggest TV shows of recent years…
Here are the top 10 titles coming soon to Amazon Prime Instant Video UK in September 2014.
Lost – Monday 1st September
Lost, one of the biggest TV series of the last 10 years, has been ironically missing from UK subscription VOD services – until now. Amazon’s acquisition of J. J. Abrams’ and Damon Lindelof’s series about a group of strangers stranded on a mysterious island, then, is something of a coup, giving fans a chance to get to grips with its ending (not to mention its beginning and middle) and others who missed the boat the first time to try it out.
Watch it now.
Ironclad – Friday 5th September
This indie Brit hack-and-slash flick is a wonderfully hammy affair, with a cast that includes Paul Giamatti and Brian Cox. They slice each other up during a medieval siege with impressive special effects and a rompingly fast pace. Helm’s cheap? Hell yes.
Hereafter – Saturday 6th September
Matt Damon plays a factory worker who is able to communicate with the dead in Clint Eastwood’s supernatural drama. Despite no longer wanting to practice as a clairvoyant, he finds himself helping three strangers in the wake of tragic loss.
Riddick – Saturday 6th September
The return of Vin Diesel as David Twohy’s sci-fi anti-hero was always an interesting prospect, with Riddick going back to its Pitch Black roots for a low-budget tale of survival, stunning effects and strange space critters. Watch it for the imagination on display – or the controversial moment that occurs halfway through…
Contagion – Friday 12th September
Steven Soberbergh’s film about a plague spreading across the planet is not only scarily believable but grippingly tense, with a cast of dead A-Listers walking, from Gwyneth Paltrow to Matt Damon and Jude Law. Another reminder of why Soderbergh will be missed from the big screen.
Community Season 5 – Monday 15th September
Community Season 5. That is all.
Freaky Friday – Friday 19th September
Mary Rodgers’ novel about a mum and daughter body-swapping got the big screen treatment back in 1976 and Disney’s likeable magic – combined with stellar turns from Barbara Harris and a young Jodie Foster – makes it one of the House of Mouse’s beloved family favourites.
Premium Rush – Thursday 25th September
Fans of Joseph Gordon-Levitt or cycling would do well to check out this 2012 action flick, which sees an unwitting courier caught up in a high-speed chase with a corrupt cop. David Koepp’s film may not be a classic, but it has Joseph Gordon-Levitt on a bike. Sometimes that’s all you need.
Transparent – Friday 26th September
From the creator of Six Feet Under, Jill Soloway, the darkly comic Transparent sees Jeffrey Tambor play the patriarch of a dysfunctional family – who become even more dysfunctional when they find out a long-hidden secret. The first of Amazon’s new batch of original shows (from their second season of TV pilots) rings with promise.
Pocahontas – Friday 26th September
Pocahontas may be the talk of the town for some rather un-magical revelations right now, but Disney’s 1995 animation, about a chief’s daughter whom is betrothed to a man she doesn’t love, is worth checking out in its own right.
