Amazon officially announces Tomb Raider series
17th May 2024
Amazon has officially given the order to a Tomb Raider series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
The hit video game is no stranger to the screen, having been turned into three feature films starring Angelina Jolie for the first two and Alicia Vikander for the third. Last year, reports emerged that Fleabag creator Waller-Bridge would be working on a live-action series based on the franchise. Now, Amazon has formally announced the project, with Waller-Bridge set to write and exec-produce the project.
The series follows the adventures of world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft. The project comes as part of a deal between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, originating through dj2’s first-look deal with the studio, to develop additional Tomb Raider stories into series and films.
Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Games have previously announced a collaboration to develop and publish a new multiplatform Tomb Raider game. The as-yet untitled game is a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure that is an all-new, next chapter to Lara Croft’s legendary explorations.
“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all,” said Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
“I’m so happy to announce that we have ordered the epic, globetrotting series Tomb Raider from the incredibly gifted Emmy-award winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the team at Crystal Dynamics,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “Fans and newcomers can look forward to exhilarating adventures that honor the legacy of this iconic character.”
“Amazon MGM Studios and Amazon Games are incredible collaborators with a massive reach across the globe enabling us to expand our Tomb Raider franchise with multiple new adventures and a shared passion for creating impactful, entertaining, emotional experiences for players and viewers throughout every facet of this universe,” said Scot Amos, Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics. “These timeless stories span all media platforms to meet audiences where they want to engage with Tomb Raider; it’s a critical step towards our future with fans everywhere.”
Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Amazon team up for Tomb Raider series
29th January 2023
Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Amazon are teaming up for a new Tomb Raider series.
The hit video game is no stranger to the screen, having been turned into three feature films starring Angelina Jolie for the first two and Alicia Vikander for the third. There’s even a Netflix anime series being released later this year, with Hayley Atwell voicing the iconic archaeologist Lara Croft. The latter was give a two-season order after a deal with Netflix and dj2 Entertainment.
Now, a new screen incarnation is in the works with THR reporting that the Fleabag creator is readying a live-action show. That is a result of Waller-Bridge’s overall deal with the online giant, which was recently renewed after an initial three-year pact. While Waller-Bridge is likely to write the scripts, there are no plans for her to star. She will, however, exec-produce alongside Dmitri M Johnson from his dj2 company.
Waller-Bridge has multiple projects in the works for Amazon, including Sign Here, based on Claudia Lux’s book, and a secret project greenlit in spring 2022 that remains a mystery and was at one point mooted to start production last year. Waller-Bridge was also attached to star alongside Donald Glover in a TV version of Mr & Mrs Smith, but she dropped out due to creative differences. Waller-Bridge will next be seen starring opposite Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones 5 and recently had a script credit on No Time to Die.
While Waller-Bridge remains a key player for Amazon, it also has wider plans for Lara Croft, with the online giant reportedly making a deal with dj2 Entertainment this month for the rights to make a Tomb Raider film and a video game, which would all link together in one connected universe.
