Netflix renews The Diplomat for Season 4
VOD News | On 17, May 2025
Netflix has already voted for another season of The Diplomat, with Kate Wyler set to return for a fourth outing.
The series, created by Debora Cahn (The West Wing, Homeland), follows Kate (Keri Russell), the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).
Season 1 premiered in April 2023 and racked up 173.46 million hours viewed in the four weeks following its debut. Season 2 arrived on Netflix in October 2024 and Kate continue trying to navigate tricky waters between British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), British PM Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) and United States Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney). Also returning were Ali Ahn as CIA Station Chief Eidra Park and Ato Essandoh as Kate’s Chief of Staff Stuart Hayford.
“This riveting, timely, funny and moving second chapter of Netflix’s political thriller is one of the best shows on TV right now,” we wrote in our review.
Before Season 2 arrived, Netflix had ordered Season 3 – and now, it’s done the same thing again with another early renewal. Bradley Whitford (The West Wing, The Handmaid’s Tale) will join the cast as Todd Penn, the husband of Grace Penn.
Creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn teases: “Season 3 flips the chessboard. Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”
Season 3 will premiere this autumn.

A second season was rapidly greenlit, which sees Kate’s worst fears unfold in the aftermath of Season 1’s explosive finale. She also has to navigate a complicated dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), British PM Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) and a threatening visit from the United States Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney). Also returning will be Ali Ahn as CIA Station Chief Eidra Park and Ato Essandoh as Kate’s Chief of Staff Stuart Hayford.
Before that arrives on Netflix on 31st October, though, Netflix has ordered Season 3.
“Season 3 flips the chessboard,” teases creator, showrunner and executive producer Debora Cahn. “In Season 3, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”
Filming on Season 3 is already underway.
