Netflix inked a first-look deal with Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd.
The series, which has been one of Netflix’s most popular TV shows this year, follows a comedian with a traumatic past whose life is upended when he ends up in a warped relationship with his stalker. Based on its own semi-autobiographical one-man play, the show last weekend dominated the Emmys with six wins – including Outstanding Limited Series.
Now, the streamer has signed a multi-year deal with Gadd to develop scripted series. It comes after Gadd has previously gone elsewhere – to the BBC and HBO – for his second TV project, Lions, which was picked up by them in June hot on the heels of Baby Reindeer’s success.
Lions will be a decades-spanning series about two brothers. When Niall’s estranged brother, Ruben, shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives. Running from the 1980s to the present day, it will cover the highs and lows of the brothers’ relationship, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way. It will capture the wild energy of a changing city – a changing world, even – and try to get to the bottom of the difficult question: what does it mean to be a man?
The deal also comes after a $170 million defamation lawsuit was filed against Netflix about Baby Reindeer and its depiction of the stalker character.
“I’m beyond thrilled to be continuing my creative journey with Netflix,” Gadd told Deadline. “They took a chance on me when I wasn’t proven in the television space for that I will always be grateful.”
