Game of Thrones may be ruling our screens when it comes to winged beasts, but Netflix has dragons all of its own – and they’ll be coming back for a third season.
Yes, Netflix has renewed its original anime The Dragon Prince. Created by Aaron Ehasz (the head writer of Avatar: The Last Airbender), the series follows two human princes, who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands. With Xadia and the Human Kingdoms are on the edge of conflict, can Callum, Ezran and Rayla overcome dark magic and restore harmony to the world?
Season 2 aired in February this year, within Netflix waiting barely a month to announce that it would return once more, dropping the news at WonderCon. Here’s the beautiful still from the show to go with the announcement:

This is not the first time Netflix has tapped the talent behind Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, widely considered two of the best animated series of modern TV: producer and storyboard artist Lauren Montgomery and director and produced Joaquim Dos Santos are the showrunners for Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender reboot.
All episodes of The Dragon Prince soar on to Netflix on 14th September. Here’s the teaser:
Netflix teams up with Avatar writer for The Dragon Prince
14th July 2018
Netflix is teaming up with the head writer of Avatar: The Last Airbender for a new animated series, The Dragon Prince.
Aaron Ehasz will pen the animation, which follows two human princes, who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands. The show, which was announced on Twitter this week, will premiere on Netflix later this year.
It marks Netflix’s growing commitment to animated projects, from anime such as Aggretsuko and Castlevania – both returning for second seasons in the near future – to its ongoing partnership with DreamsWork Animation. Even Matt Groening is heading to Netflix this August with his new fantasy comedy, Disenchantment.
The Dragon Prince shares a similarly famous name behind its title. Indeed, this is not the first time Netflix has tapped the talent behind Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, widely considered two of the best animated series of modern TV: producer and storyboard artist Lauren Montgomery and director and produced Joaquim Dos Santos are the showrunners for Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender reboot.
