Killing Eve leads 2019 TV BAFTAs with triple win
David Farnor | On 13, May 2019
Comedy, thriller and drama Killing Eve was a triple threat at last night’s BAFTAs, walking away from the ceremony with three wins.
The series, created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, bagged the big prize at the 2019 awards, winning Best Drama, as well we Best Actress for Jodie Comer and Best Supporting Actor for Fiona Shaw.
It was a night where the BBC dominated, taking home both Male and Female Comedy Performance gongs for There She Goes and Inside No. 9, while also winning Best Soap and Continuing Drama for EastEnders. A Very English Scandal won Best Supporting Actor for Ben Whishaw, while Louis Theroux won Best Factual Series for BBC Two’s Altered States and Who Do You Think You Are? was crowned Best Features.
ITV, though, still picked up prizes for its seemingly unbeatable Ant & Dec double-act, even in a year when Ant had to take time out, leaving Dec hosting solo: they took home Entertainment and Reality prizes for I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here and Britain’s Got Talent, although they lost Best Entertainment Performance to Lee Mack for the panel show Would I Lie To You?.
After receiving 16 nominations, meanwhile, Sky enjoyed a record haul, collecting awards for three of its Sky originals. Benedict Cumberbatch triumphed in the leading actor category for Patrick Melrose – his first ever BAFTA 0 while the Sky original drama also took home the BAFTA for Mini-Series. Sally4Ever won the award for Scripted Comedy and A League of Their Own won for Comedy Entertainment programme. The HBO drama Succession, which airs on Sky Atlantic, also took home the International award.
