First look: Filming begins on Ted Lasso Season 4

Ted Lasso is returning to Richmond, this time to coach a women’s football team – and a new image from Apple TV+ gives us a first look at the show’s fourth season.
The comedy stars Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso, a small-time college football coach from Kansas who was initially hired to coach a professional soccer team in England despite having no experience coaching soccer. In addition to starring, Sudeikis serves as executive producer, alongside Bill Lawrence (Scrubs), with the show based on a character who was first created as part of a series of joke promos for NBC Sports in the US.
With co-stars including Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster and Nick Mohammed, the show was a breakout hit for Apple TV+, running for three seasons – and, after a long period of silence and speculation, it’s perhaps no surprise that Apple TV+ has succeeding in getting the gang back together for a fourth chapter.
Season 4 will see Ted return to Richmond, taking on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women’s football team. Throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would.
The first image of the new season catches up with Ted back in his home of Kansas, but also confirms that alongside Sudeikis reprising his role as the optimistic coach, other returning cast members will include Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple and Jeremy Swift. Other returning cast members will also include Brendan Hunt and Brett Goldstein. New cast members on the way will include Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey and Abbie Hern.
Behind the camera, Jack Burditt (Nobody Wants This, Modern Family, 30 Rock) is serving as executive producer under a new overall deal with Apple TV+. Sudeikis stars and executive produces alongside Brendan Hunt, Joe Kelly, Jane Becker, Jamie Lee and Bill Wrubel. Brett Goldstein serves as writer and executive producer alongside Leanne Bowen. Sarah Walker and Phoebe Walsh will serve as writers and producers, and Sasha Garron co-produces. Julia Lindon will write for Season 4, and Dylan Marron will serve as story editor. Bill Lawrence executive produces, alongside Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer.
Filming on Season 4 is now under way.

Season 4 will reunite the team behind the hit comedy, with Jason Sudeikis reprising his role as Ted Lasso.
“As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to look before we leap,” said star and executive producer Sudeikis, “in Season 4, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be.”
“Ted Lasso has been nothing short of a juggernaut, inspiring a passionate fanbase all over the world, and delivering endless joy and laughter, all while spreading kindness, compassion and unwavering belief,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “Everyone at Apple is thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Jason and the brilliant creative minds behind this show.”

Ted Lasso Season 4 on the cards
27th August 2024
A fourth season of Ted Lasso is on the cards for Apple TV+, as the initial plays are made off the pitch to get the show back on our screens.
The comedy stars Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso, a small-time college football coach from Kansas who is hired to coach a professional soccer team in England despite having no experience coaching soccer. The series also stars Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster and Nick Mohammed. In addition to starring, Sudeikis serves as executive producer, alongside Bill Lawrence (Scrubs), with the show based on a character who was first created as part of a series of joke promos for NBC Sports in the US.
It emerged as a breakout winner for Apple TV+, winning back-to-back Emmy Award wins for Outstanding Comedy Series. Its third season arrived in March 2023, to more lukewarm reviews as Lawrence stepped away to focus on another Apple TV+ series, Shrinking. The season wrapped up events in a way that was received as a fitting finale to bid farewell to the characters, although there was speculation about spin-off shows featuring the return of some of the fan favourites.
Apple and Warner Bros TV have previously said that they would be happy to renew the series, but only if Sudeikis was willing to go ahead. A year on and Apple is becoming increasingly cautious, in line with Amazon and Netflix’s strategies, when it comes to commissioning and budgets. Nonetheless, it now looks like a fourth season could be on the way.
Deadline reports that three of the original cast members, who had been contracted under Equity, have had their options picked up – Hannah Waddingham (AFC Richmond’s boss, Rebecca Walton), Brett Goldstein (former footballing tough guy Roy Kent) and Jeremy Swift (AFC Richmond’s number two, Leslie Higgins). The next step is expected to be approaching other cast members previously signed under SAG-AFTRA, whose options have expired. Deadline reports that Phil Dunster (who plays heartthrob Jamie Tart) has not been picked up, as he moves on to other projects, including Amazon’s The Devil’s Hour.
If all the key players come together to form a team, production would be expected to be in early 2025. Watch this space.
