Netflix has unleashed the first trailer for its Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, the follow-up to Ang Lee’s sensational martial arts masterpiece, is based on the novel Iron Knight, Silver Vase, by Wang Dulu (book 5 in the Crane-Iron Pentalogy) and written by John Fusco (Marco Polo).
this sequel is directed by Yuen Wo-Ping (Tai Chi Master), who was the action choreographer on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Kill Bill and The Matrix.
Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as Yu Shu-Lien and is joined by Donnie Yen as Silent Wolf, Harry Shum Jr. (Glee, Revenge of the Green Dragons), Jason Scott Lee (Seventh Son, Hawaii Five-O), Roger Yuan (Bulletproof Monk), Eugenia Yuan (Revenge of the Green Dragons) and newcomer Natasha Liu Bordizzo.
Produced by The Weinstein Company, the film tells a story of young love and a legendary sword – a weapon that, should it fall into the hands of an evil warlord, will change the world (and the warriors trying to protect it) in “ways they never imagined”.
Originally called The Green Legend, the sequel has now been renamed after that sword, but that is likely to be only one of several controversial decisions following the release of the trailer, which has already been criticised by fans for the movie’s use of CGI instead of practical stunts and its bizarre use of music – namely, a cover of Bad Moon Rising.
The film will be released theatrically in China and on IMAX and on Netflix globally in the first quarter of 2016.
