Amazon has cancelled The Wheel of Time after three seasons.
Based on the books by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, the series is set in a sprawling world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it. It stars Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organisation called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.
The show was the first entry into the fantasy genre for Amazon Prime Video, which has since followed it up with The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, as the online giant hoped to make the next Game of Thrones-sized hit show. The third season aired recently, but has seen its viewership slide slightly over time, despite a strong start in times of viewership and a positive reception for Season 3, which is regarded as the show’s best chapter yet. Now, however, the viewing figures have apparently slid enough to the point where Amazon doesn’t want to renew it for another season.
Deadline reports that there lots of discussions held with studio Sony TV about the programme’s future, but the ultimately decision was a financial one rather than a creative one. The move comes after lots of speculation about the future of The Rings of Power, with a third season recently greenlit for that fantasy series – but with a notable time-jump that will likely see the show conclude in a shorter timeframe than its originally conceived five-season arc.
