HBO is doubling down on its expanding Game of Thrones universe by renewing both House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in one fell swoop.
Based on George RR Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is a prequel set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, telling the story of House Targaryen. Season 2 aired in June 2024, when we last saw Westeros on the brink of a bloody civil war, with the Green and Black Councils fighting for King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra, respectively, as each side believed theirs to be the rightful seat on the Iron Throne.
“It’s a family feud writ large, a political and personal battle steeped in violence and vengeance,” we wrote in our review of Season 1. “It’s Succession – with dragons.”
Season 3 will air in summer 2026, with a cast including Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steven Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, and Abubakar Salim.
Now, before the show returns, HBO has ordered a fourth chapter.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is an endearing tale centered on the adventures of an unexpected duo. Season 1 stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, alongside Daniel Ings, Bertie Carvel, Danny Webb, Sam Spruell, Shaun Thomas, Finn Bennett, Edward Ashley, Tanzyn Crawford, Henry Ashton, Youssef Kerkour, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor and Daniel Monks.
Season 1 will debut on Monday 19th January 2026 – and now, before the first season has even aired, HBO has already committed to a second season.
The result will see a Game of Thrones programme on our screens every year for the next three years, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 airing in 2027 and House of the Dragon Season 4 airing in 2028.
Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, says: “We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe. Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be. In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have so beautifully captured. And this Summer, House of the Dragon is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”
