HBO’s Mosaic premieres on UK TV this weekend
VOD News | On 17, Feb 2018
HBO’s Mosaic finally has a UK TV air date – and, for those tired of waiting for the show to land on British screens, the good news is that it premieres this weekend.
Steven Soderbergh’s innovative thriller follows the killing of famed children’s author Olivia Lake, played by Sharon Stone. The story starts at the end, in what emerges as a twisting tale of passion, intrigue and deception, as one woman’s rural idealism gets submerged by an avalanche of lies, corruption and murder.
Stone is joined by an impressive cast that includes Garrett Hedlund, Paul Reubens, Devin Ratray, Frederick Weller, Beau Bridges, Jennifer Ferrin, Michael Cerveris, James Ransone, Jeremy Bobb and Maya Kazan. The innovative part, meanwhile, comes from the way the series was designed: conceived as a puzzle that could be shuffled in any order, it was developed by Soderbergh and Casey Silver as an interactive storytelling experience. It premiered in the US as an app allow users to choose the perspective from which to follow events, a detailed approach that took three years to create, enabling multiple version of the story and possibly even different endings.
Now, HBO is presenting Soderbergh’s version, as a six-part series. The bad news is that, in the UK, the Mosaic app as originally conceived is not available – Sky holds the exclusive rights to HBO content on British soil, which means that HBO locked its app to American users only. There is no word of Sky releasing the interactive experience through its Sky VR app.
The good news is that the series is airing on Sky Atlantic from Saturday 17th February, with episodes arriving at 10pm weekly. Don’t have Sky? You can also tune in through NOW TV, which allows non-Sky customers to watch Sky Atlantic (Mosaic), FOX UK (The Walking Dead), Sky 1 (The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow) and more both live and on-demand, as part of a £7.99 monthly subscription – with a 14-day free trial available.
The really good news is that while we can’t pick and choose the Mosaic story we get, we can binge the whole thing in one go, with the entire six-episode box set available now, before its UK broadcast, on both Sky Box Sets and NOW TV. HBO’s Mosaic gets new trailer but still no UK release date
10th January 2018
HBO has unveiled a new trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s innovative thriller, Mosaic.
Who murdered Olivia Lake, the famed children’s author? Mosaic’s story begins where her life ends, with Sharon Stone playing the author and illustration, in what HBO describes as a twisting tale of passion, intrigue and deception. Stone is joined by Garrett Hedlund, Frederick Weller, Beau Bridges, Paul Reubens, Jennifer Ferrin, Devin Ratray, Michael Cerveris, James Ransone, Jeremy Bobb and Maya Kazan.
What’s so innovative about that, you ask? Because Soderbergh’s Mosaic is just that: a puzzle with pieces that lets the audience assemble the bigger picture. Presented by PodOp and developed for HBO by Soderbergh and Casey Silver, in conjunction with writer Ed Solomon, the series premiered as an app that provides an interactive storytelling experience. Three years in the making, it allows viewers to choose what point-of-view from which to follow the story and to, in effect, build their own experience from the material Soderbergh and Solomon created. The choices one makes build upon one another, enabling multiple tellings of the story from different perspectives and, sometimes, with different conclusions.
Now, HBO is preparing to present Soderbergh’s version of events, with a six-part limited series arrived this month as an old-school piece of linear TV.
While HBO kicks off its promotion for the TV show proper, though, there is still no sign yet of a UK release date for either the app or the series. Sky has the exclusive rights to HBO content in the UK, which means we can expect the six-part series to arrive on our screens on Sky Atlantic in the coming weeks or months. The app, though, was only released in the US last year. Sky is stepping up its investment in its own VR and interactive app and platform, Sky VR, so there is a chance that Mosaic could become a Sky original for download there. A UK debut as a standalone app, though, is less likely, as Sky’s model is built around exclusivity, and a free online release by HBO would undermine that market position; innovation in content is one thing, but the industry needs to be able to innovate to keep up with it.
Mosaic will start its US broadcast on 22nd January. Watch this space for UK release details as soon as we have them.
