Amazon Studios has inked an overall deal with Game of Thrones veteran Bryan Cogman.
The writer and producer has been a presence on the series ever since its first season, when he began as an assistant to creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. He went on to write a number of episodes across its many seasons, including Stormborn, The Broken Man, Blood of My Blood, Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken, Kill the Boy, The Laws of Gods and Men, Oathkeeper (pictured), Kissed by Fire, What Is Dead May Never Die, Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things.
As he rose to become one of the fantasy epic’s key writers, he also became a co-exec producer on the project. The Emmy-winning producer has also written the book Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones. Now, he is moving on to pastures new with a new overall deal at Amazon Studios. The multi-year agreement will see him work exclusively with the online giant’s studio team to create original series for exclusive global premiere.
Cogman is no stranger to the streaming world: he is also credited as a writer of the live action remake of The Sword in the Stone for Disney’s upcoming streaming service.
“We’re proud to be in business with Bryan, who has written some of the most memorable and exhilarating television in recent history,” Albert Cheng, Co-Head Television, Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “His storytelling prowess is undeniable, and we cannot wait to introduce his voice to our Prime Video audience.”
“I couldn’t be more thrilled and honored to start the next phase of my career with Amazon. I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to start writing,” added Cogman.
The deal marks Amazon’s growing push into higher-end, bigger-budget projects, as it looks to create its own answer to watercooler hits such as Game of Thrones and Stranger Things. Talents such as The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman are part of its assembled team of genre creators to achieve that aim, with sci-fi drama Transhuman and dystopian Western East of West both in development. They join the ongoing alt-history epic The Man in the High Castle and the newly launched action thriller Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.
