What’s leaving Netflix UK in April / May 2018?
David Farnor | On 16, Apr 2018
The sun may be coming out to play once more, but before the weather draws you outside, Netflix has several burning reasons to stay indoors for one more day – a whole bunch of classics departing the streaming service before the end of the moth, from The Martian and Spotlight to Inherent Vice and even The Shawshank Redemption.
This is your last chance to stream the following on Netflix UK:
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – 17th April
This high-profile sequel sees the young adult franchise continue, as our kids bust out of the maze – but still have far more sinister things to run from.
American Sniper – 18th April
Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-nominated film about the most lethal sniper in US history features gripping action scenes, a provocative focus on a gun-loving hero and a stellar turn from Bradley Cooper.
Focus – 18th April
Will Smith and Margot Robbie’s chemistry sparks in this stylish, if shallow, con artist thriller.
Inherent Vice – 18th April
A stoner crime comedy drama by Paul Thomas Anderson? Breathe it in.
Jupiter Ascending – 18th April
A young woman discovers her destiny as an heiress of intergalactic nobility in The Wachowskis’ visually stunning sci-fi epic.
The Shawshank Redemption – 22nd April
Wrongly convicted, Andy Dufresne is sentenced to two life terms in Maine’s Shawshank prison. He learns how to get by in the brutal confines of prison while earning the respect of his fellow inmates, most notably lifer Red. Based on the Stephen King novella of the same name and starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, this stirring drama is one of the best films of the last 30 years.
The Martian – 24th April
Ridley Scott’s sci-fi, starring Matt Damon as a scientist who is accidentally left stranded on Mars, is a witty, funny, inspiring tale of survival – and a rare example of blockbuster filmmaking that is happy simply to celebrate smart people being smart.
Spotlight – 28th April
This Oscar-winning drama about the Boston Globe’s investigation into childhood abuse at the hands of Catholic priests in the early 2000s is understated, gripping, important viewing.
RuPaul’s Drag Race: Season 2 to 7 – 30th April
Gentlemen, stop your engines and have a moment’s silence for the six classic seasons of the affirming, unique reality competition sashay away from Netflix UK.
Be Kind Rewind – 30th April
Jack Black and Mos Def are hugely entertaining in this amiable comedy about a man who accidentally erases a video store’s VHS tapes, leading them to try and recreate the most popular films on a low budget with their own camera.
Camp X-Ray – 30th April
Kristen Stewart is superb in this drama about a young woman who leaves her home town to become a guard at Guantanamo Bay.
Chicken Run – 30th April
Aardman’s animated take on The Great Escape is full of the stop-motion studio’s trademark wit and humour, as Mel Gibson voices a bird leading the flight to freedom from the tyranny of Tweedy’s farm.
The Descent – 30th April
Neil Marshall’s horror, about a group of women who get trapped in a series of Scottish caves, combines claustrophobia, darkness and creepy monster design to terrifying – and bloody – effect.
Enemy at the Gates – 30th April
This underrated thriller sees a Russian sniper and German sniper playing cat and mouse during the Battle of Stalingrad – and boasts an impressive cast, including Jude Law and Ed Harris as the two snipers, and Joseph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, Bob Hoskins and Ron Perlman.
Michael Clayton – 30th April
George Clooney embraces shades of grey in this low-key drama about a fixer at a New York firm who has to help a guilt-ridden colleague (Tom Wilkinson) when they have a breakdown during a major class-action lawsuit.
Philomena – 30th April
Steve Coogan and Judi Dench make a charming odd couple in Stephen Frears’ drama about an old lady teaming up with a jaded journalist to find out what happened to her son, after being separated from him when younger by a Catholic home.
Sense and Sensibility – 30th April
Ang Lee’s take on Sense and Sensibility features a stellar script from Emma Thompson, who also joins an impressive cast that includes Kate Winslet, Tom Wilinson, Hugh Grant and – most importantly – Alan Rickman in a hat as Colonel Brandon.
Slumdog Millionaire – 30th April
Who wants to be a millionaire? Pretty much everyone in the slums of Mumbai, apparently. Everyone, that is, except for Jamal (a breakout turn from Dev Patel). But it’s this impoverished Indian answering the infamous fifteen questions. One away from the jackpot, he is arrested for fraud and savagely interrogated. How does someone like him know the answers? Danny Boyle’s uplifting fable is an eye-opening rush of raw cinematic verve.
Trance – 30th April
James McAvoy and Vincent Cassel star in Danny Boyle’s twisting thriller about a gang of thieves who try to steal a priceless painting, and leave auctioneer Simon unable to remember where he hid it. Rosario Dawson steals the whole film from underneath them as a hypnotherapist hired to find the answer.
The Virgin Suicides – 30th April
A group of male friends become obsessed with five mysterious sisters who are sheltered by their strict, religious parents in Sofia Coppola’s superb directorial debut.
Grandma – 3rd May
“Where can you get a reasonably priced abortion in this town?” That’s the kind of grandmotherly advice you can expect from Elle (Lily Tomlin). 76 years of age, she’s not afraid to say what she thinks – even in sweetest of situations. So when her granddaughter, Sage, turns up pregnant on her doorstep, what follows is an 80-minute jaunt around town to raise funds. This is funny, feisty and surprisingly feel-good.
