What’s coming soon to Arrow UK in March 2021?
David Farnor | On 02, Mar 2021
Arrow (formerly the Arrow Video Channel) is a streaming service curated by members of the Arrow Video team, bringing together new horror, cult classics, cutting edge cinema, international favourites and more – from Lars von Trier to Park Chan-wook, plus TV shows such as The Bridge and Gomorrah.
March sees Arrow blossom with its second month in the UK bringing one of its first exclusive premieres in the shape of Jill Gevargizian’s The Stylist. The month also features shorts from Brian Lonano and Jim Cummings, the reappearance of two Invisible Man rarities and a celebration of Meiko Kaji.
The Stylist – 1st March
Jill Gevargizian’s debut feature THE STYLIST is a sleek psychological thriller about a hairdresser with an extremely dark secret. This is an astute study of loneliness and obsession with a deliciously macabre flavour. Accompanying the film are a selection of ARROW Stories – including the original short film, six featurettes, outtakes, a new visual essay and more.
Holy Motors – 1st March
Leo Carax’s brilliant, visually striking fantasy spends a few hours in the shadowy life of a mystic man named Monsieur Oscar.
Brian Lonano Collection: Vol. 1 – 1st March
ARROW showcase a collection of five weird, wonderful and downright insane award-winning short films from director Brian Lonano, including the utterly outrageous Gwilliam – winner of the ‘Most Effectively Offensive’ award at the Boston Underground Film Festival – gruesome comedy horror Crow Hand!!!, a superhero story like no other in BFF Girls, the Halloween themed nuttiness of Gwilliam’s Tips for Turning Tricks into Treats; and the exclusive premiere of The Devil’s Asshole, where a chili cook accidentally summons a demon.
Traffic Was Murder (Season) – 1st March
This specially curated season is a collection of ARROW automotive annihilation that’ll rev your engine! Watch David Cronenberg’s cult shocker Crash, Japanese thrillers Black Test Car and Burst City, grindhouse classic Hitchhike to Hell, and many, many more.
Unchained Melody: The Films of Meiko Kaji (Season) – 1st March
It’s time to bow down to the Queen of Japanese Action cinema. This cult cinema powerhouse broke onto the Japanese cinema scene in the 60s and has reigned supreme ever since. From leading the rebellious girl gangs of Stray Cat Rock to being a harbinger of pure unbridled vengeance in Female Prisoner Scorpion, Kaji has done it all.
The Invisible Man Double-Bill – 1st March
The Invisible Man Appears / The Invisible Man vs. The Human Fly – these unique and previously unseen (outside of Japan) riffs on HG Wells’ classic character are two of the earliest examples of tokusatsu (special effects) cinema from Daiei Studios, later the home of creature feature legend Gamera.
Caught on Tape (Season) – 8th March
Viral outbreaks, death curses, illicit sex, pervy pictures and uncomfortable truths – the Caught On Tape season is a selection of films where posing for a photo, filming something never meant to be seen or watching unearthed videos is all good fun, but could also get you in big trouble – or even killed. Films included in the collection are camcorder creep-out [REC], the insane VHS revelations of The El Duce Tapes, the J-horror classic series of Ring films, and Dutch treat Videoman.
Make-Up Effects Masterclass – 12th March
We all know CGI blood sucks and that lovingly-crafted hand-made artery-gushing flesh-peeling stomach-churning practical effects are where it’s at. Make-Up Effects Masterclass is full of examples of the best, from the best. Films in the collection include icky gross-outs of Re-Animator and Bride of Re-Animator, the eye-popping and flesh-ripping effects of the classic Hellraiser series, and bucket loads more, as well as fantastic ARROW stories, packed with behind-the-scenes looks at these classics.
The Jim Cummings Collection – 15th March
ARROW presents a selection of short films from Jim Cummings, Sundance Film Festival Short Film Grand Jury prize winner for 2016’s Thunder Road (which he turned into the SXSW winning 2018 feature). You can watch all five episodes from Cummings’ startlingly original single-take mini-series Minutes, including Parent Teacher, Cory Comes to Xmas, The Stop, Marty Hearts Katie, Sundance-nominated The Robbery, Native Stand Up as well as the short film Us Funny.
A Trip to the Moon – 15th March
Stream a colour and black-and-white version of cinema pioneer Georges Méliès’ classic.
13 Assassins – 15th March
Seven Samurai with attitude? Home Alone with swords? Takashi Miike’s action-packed thriller is violent, epic and fantastic.
