Amazon has renewed You Are Wanted for a second season.
The streaming service’s first German original series, which follows a Lukas Franke, a young hotel manager who finds himself the victim of a hacker, was released globally on Amazon Prime Video last month. The show marks a big step up for Amazon’s original content, as it diversifies its output to cater to wider audiences – Prime Video expanded to almost 200 countries last year – and that move has paid off: the series enjoyed the most successful opening weekend of a series in the history of Amazon Prime Video in Germany and Austria, where the subscription service has had a presence for some time.
That success also spread to other countries: in its first weekend, You Are Wanted was among the five most-watched shows on Amazon Prime Video across 70 nations, including Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, France and Spain. As a result, Amazon has now renewed the series for a second run.
Created by and starring Matthias Schweighöfer, the thriller sees Lukas under the investigation of the German Federal Criminal Office (BKA), who suspect him of being part of a terrorist organisation. With his wife (Alexandra Maria Lara) beginning to doubt him, he joins forces with Lena Arandt (Karoline Herfurth), another victim of the hackers, to get his old life back.
The programme is available to UK Amazon Prime Video subscribers in both dubbed and subtitled versions. You can read our spoiler-free review of the series here.
You Are Wanted: Amazon’s first German original series gets global release
10th February 2017
Amazon is releasing its first German original series this March.
You Are Wanted, produced by and starring Matthias Schweighöfer, will launch in Germany, and across more than 200 countries and territories on six continents, including the UK – the first time that a German show can be watched in so many countries all over the world.
“When we created You Are Wanted, we aimed at making a German series that would appeal to both a German and international audience,” says Matthias Schweighöfer. “Together with Amazon, we are making that happen for the first time in German TV history. I’m really looking forward to showing this thrilling story to fans around the world.”
You Are Wanted tells the story of Lukas Franke (Schweighöfer), a young hotel manager and father who is brutally torn out of his everyday life when his personal data is hacked and he finds the story of his life beginning to be rewritten. As strange news continues to emerge, Lukas finds his digital identity continuously manipulated, arousing the suspicion of the German Federal Criminal Office (BKA), who accuse him of being a member of a terrorist organisation. Even his wife begins to doubt him. When his child is threatened, it is obvious to Lukas that he has to fight back. He joins forces with Lena Arandt, who is also a victim of the hackers. With her help he tries to find them and hunt them down. Who is behind the conspiracy? Why was he targeted? Lukas is forced to fight back, find the perpetrators, prove his innocence and get back his old life.
Alongside Schweighöfer, You Are Wanted’s cast includes Alexandra Maria Lara (Downfall), Karoline Herfurth (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer), and Tom Beck (Einstein). It is produced by Pantaleon Entertainment AG, Warner Bros. Entertainment GmbH and Warner Bros. International Television Production Deutschland GmbH. Dan Maag, Matthias Schweighöfer, Marco Beckmann and Willi Geike are the producers of the series. The show is co-directed by Bernhard Jasper, with Hanno Hackfort, Bob Konrad and Richard Kropf on scripting duties.
“Almost exactly one year ago, Amazon Prime Video, together with our partners Warner Bros. and PANTALEON Films, was the first video streaming service to announce that it will launch a German Original TV show,” adds Christoph Schneider, Managing Director of Amazon Video Germany. “Today, You Are Wanted is setting new levels of ambition: It’s the first German TV show to be available almost everywhere in the world. That’s ground-breaking news for the German TV industry. We believe that quality shows made in Germany like You Are Wanted can excite customers all around the globe.”
“As Prime Video expands globally, You are Wanted signifies our commitment to delivering premium local original content to key territories,” comments Morgan Wandell, head of International Productions for Amazon Studios. “We will continue to look for the most ambitious ideas and the best talent in countries around the world to create the very best streaming video service for our customers.”
The show will premiere on Friday 17th March. All six episodes will be available with dubbing in English, French, Italian and Spanish. Additionally, subtitles will be available in Portuguese, Hindi and Japanese.
