Channel 4’s online channel dedicated to foreign-language telly is unwrapping three new box sets for viewers this December, featuring the return of one wise man, a serving of milk and honey and chilling mystery to watch on cold winter nights.
The wise man’s return is, of course, Professor T, which will premiere all 13 episodes of its second season on 1st December.
Belgium’s most neurotic and endearing detective, the show’s namesake and central character is a prodigal criminologist at Antwerp University who has inspired scores of students with his punchy teaching techniques. Outside of the lecture halls, he is a crucial part of Annelies Donckers’ team at the Antwerp Homicide Department.
Following Professor T’s declining mental health throughout the previous season and the shocking finale, the opening of Season 2 sees him leaving a psychiatric hospital after a six month stay. The outside world is very different from how he left it, and during his absence, his post has been filled by another academic, quite possibly for good. Can he recover enough to resume his old life?
Professor T will be joined by Milk and Honey, described by Walter as “The Full Monty in Galilee”.
The sundrenched and heartwarming comedy about friendship, love, the birds and the bees sees Johnnie inherit his late father’s failing honey business, only to stumble across a controversial yet lucrative arm of the enterprise to boost cashflow. With the help of three childhood friends from a small village in Galilee, they open an escort service exclusively for women, the first of its kind in the country.
The service becomes an unprecedented success around Galilee and their business proves a financially rewarding one but the four friends struggle with their new identities as gigolos and the challenges it throws up. As their new career sees them embark on a series of adventures, they tread a fine and dangerous line between their personal and professional lives.
While the male protagonists may occupy the limelight, Walter Presents: Milk and Honey also has been heralded for its progressive portrayal of women. Not only is the narrative driven by female desire, but it is the female characters who call the shots: they are the breadwinners, the decision-makers and even the male escort business is run by Johnnie’s teenage sister.
Created by award-winning Dani Rosenberg and Tom Shoval and made by the internationally renowned Keshet, Milk and Honey was a huge success in Israel and when it came out in 2015 it was the third most watched live and on-demand show on Yes, Israel’s sole direct broadcast satellite television provider. this slick high-quality production does not disappoint.
The full season will be available on All 4 from 1st December.
For those who prefer their shows with more mystery, Vanished by the Lake is an ideal stocking filler for December binge-watching.
The thriller about an unsolved tragedy that haunts a close-knit community on the turquoise waters of Lac de Sainte-Croix sees Lise return to her small hometown for the first time since her teens. Now a detective, she is back to care for her Alzheimer’s-afflicted mother. But the day she arrives, a neighbour’s teenage daughter goes missing under the exact same circumstances as Lise’s two best friends 15 years previously. Determined to prevent history from repeating itself Lise imposes herself on the local police squad to help find the missing girl.
The first episode will be broadcast on Channel 4 on 13th December, with the full box set than available to watch online.
