Ripper Street Season 3 will be released on Amazon Prime Instant Video from Friday 14th November.
The British drama was resurrected by Amazon earlier this year after fans petitioned for it to return following its cancellation. Now, Amazon has announced that the third season of Ripper Street will start at 9pm on Friday 14th November exclusively for Amazon Prime Instant Video members.
The show was commissioned by Amazon from the producers, Tiger Aspect Productions and Lookout Point, and is co-produced by BBC America. This joint production means that the series will also be released on linear TV, but only after the exclusive online run has finished.
Amazon is retaining Ripper Street’s release format, though: new episodes will debut, BBC-style, every Friday at 9pm. The season will launch with a double bill on 14th November with the series culminating in an explosive finale on Boxing Day. It will then go on to screen on BBC One and BBC America in 2015.
Despite the old-school weekly release, the Amazon version will differ from the terrestrial programme: Prime Instant Video members will enjoy a special extended ‘Amazon cut’ of all eight episodes of the programme, including exclusive scenes which will be cut from the BBC broadcast so that the show fits the traditional one-hour runtime.
“In its design, Series 3 of Ripper Street was always meant to be our most ambitious yet and we are delighted that Amazon has given us the creative freedom to make good on that ambition,” says the show’s creator and writer Richard Warlow.
“With no restrictions on either the content or the length of each episode, we have been able to reassemble our magnificent cast and pitch them into a suit of stories which we hope will delight the millions of fans who, thanks to this unique partnership, will now be able to enjoy the show on Amazon Prime Instant Video this year, then on the BBC, and around the rest of the world, in 2015.”
Season 3 will return audiences to Ripper Street’s notorious ‘H’ Division, the police precinct charged with keeping order on the meanest beat imaginable: late Victorian Whitechapel. Matthew Macfadyen reprises his starring role as Detective Inspector Reid, supported by Jerome Flynn as the newly promoted Detective Inspector Bennet Drake, Adam Rothenberg as Captain Homer Jackson and MyAnna Buring as Long Susan.
The eight episode run picks up in 1894, four years after the culmination of Season 2, during which time Reid, Drake, Jackson and Long Susan have been split and divided by those events. As this season begins, however, the violent heist of a goods train sets off a cataclysmic chain reaction that is to return them to each other’s side, before spiralling uncontrollably toward a conclusion that will leave them changed forever.
“We know there are a huge number of fans out there who want more of the gripping storylines we’ve come to expect from BAFTA-nominated writer Richard Warlow and we’re delighted to be bringing the third series of this show to our customers exclusively this autumn,” comments Chris Bird, Head of Content Acquisition at Amazon.
“From what we’ve seen from the scripts and first edit it’s clear that this series has raised the bar, we’re confident that Ripper Street fans will be thrilled with what they see.”
Matthew Macfadyen says that he is “delighted and excited” to be back for a third series of Ripper: “Thank you to Amazon, thank you to our fans who wanted more, and thank you to our wonderful writers and producers for giving us the most thoroughly brilliant, gripping and heart-rending opening episodes.”
