Netflix is returning to Argentina to kick off a new soccer crime drama, Puerta 7.
Netflix’s third Argentine original series is created by Martin Zimmerman (Ozark, Narcos), written by Patricio Vega (Los Simuladores) and produced by local powerhouse production company Pol-ka, which also produced the Emmy-nominated miniseries Epitafios for HBO.
Puerta 7 is an unflinching exploration of Argentina’s infamous (and world famous) soccer barra bravas, which sit the nexus of sports, national politics, and organized crime, will follow one woman’s attempt to cut through this male-dominated world and cleanse one club of its corruption and criminal element in order to redeem her family name; one young man’s descent into a barra brava in order to lift his family from back-breaking poverty; as well as the civil war within that same club’s barra brava as warring factions fight over the millions they syphon off from the club’s every revenue stream.
“We’re thrilled to continue investing in the wonderful content and talent Argentina has to offer, and especially to be working on our new Argentine original with Pol-ka and the creators of hit shows such as Los Simuladores and Ozark,” says Erik Barmack, Vice President of International Originals.
“As a lifelong soccer fan, for years I’ve wanted to explore the intersection between the sport, politics, and crime in Argentina—one of the great incubators for global soccer talent, and my mother’s homeland”, adds showrunner Zimmerman. “There is no better place than Netflix to bring this story about the world’s favorite sport to a global audience. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with Netflix yet again, combining the experience I gained on both Ozark and Narcos with the talents of my brilliant collaborators in Argentina, to make this dream a reality.”
“We’re very excited that Netflix has relied on Pol-Ka to produce this original series”, adds Adrián Suar, Founder and Artistic Director of Pol-Ka. “Since its inception, our production company has worked tirelessly with to produce high-quality content for television, and this opportunity fills us with pride: it is a huge challenge that we’ll undertake with all the passion, commitment and responsibility that we put into every project”.
Composed of eight one-hour episode and shot entirely in 4k, the thriller joins a larger slate of original productions being filmed in Latin America, including Argentine productions Edha and Go! Vive a tu Manera, as well as Ingobernable, Club de Cuervos, La Casa de las Flores, Monarca, Siempre Bruja, Narcos, Samantha!, O Mecanismo, O Matador, 3%, Sintonia, Super Drags and Coisa Mais Linda, among others.
Puerta 7 will premiere globally on Netflix in 2019.
Puerta 7 is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
