Netflix UK to release Jane the Virgin Season 4 this October

Netflix is the new official UK home of Jane the Virgin, with Season 4 to air this October alongside its US broadcast.
The show stars Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez as Jane Villanueva, a working, religious young Latina virgin, who becomes pregnant after being artificially inseminated by mistake. The CBS series also stars Justin Baldoni as Rafael, Brett Dier as Michael, Andrea Navedo as Xiomara, Yael Grobglas as Petra, Ivonne Coll as Alba and Jaime Camil as Rogelio.
The series first aired on E4 in the UK, which had the rights to the first two seasons. However, the channel struggled to draw in audience numbers for the programme, moving the series to an earlier mid-week slot for its second run in 2016. Last month, though, E4 decided that it would no longer carry the show, instead opting to spend its budget on upcoming US series. The decision left Jane Villanueva without a home – almost.
Netflix and CBS signed an agreement back in 2015 for the second-run rights to Jane the Virgin, with the streaming service releasing the show in full-season box sets several months after its initial broadcast on E4.
“We’re thrilled to offer our members these hit CBS series,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, when the deal for Jane the Virgin was inked, alongside fellow CBS show Zoo (which currently has its first-run rights with Sky 1). “Both shows are delightfully entertaining and will find a big audience across the more than 50 countries where Netflix is available.”
“We’re excited to partner with Netflix around the world for these two excellent, CBS-produced series,” added Armando Nuñez, President and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group. “Both Zoo and Jane The Virgin have already generated excitement in the US and internationally, and we look forward to expanding their audience to Netflix members globally.”
Now, TV Wise reports that Netflix has stepped up its agreement to cover the first-run rights for Jane the Virgin Season 4, which means it will air on Netflix on a weekly basis, with episodes following their US debut. On the down side, you won’t be able to binge-watch the whole lot immediately. On the plus side, you get to see each episode as soon as possible.
The CW announced earlier this year that Jane the Virgin will return on Friday 13th October, alongside Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which means that the UK release date for each will be Saturday 14th October. Indeed, Netflix now has the rights from CBS Studios International for a number of CW series, including Riverdale, iZombie and – most recently – the upcoming reboot of Dynasty.
Season 3 of Jane the Virgin was added to Netflix on Friday 30th June. For more on what’s coming soon to Netflix UK, click here – or head this way to stay up-to-date with what’s new on Netflix UK.
