Netflix snaps up Misha Green’s Mother

Netflix has snapped up the rights to Misha Green’s Mother. The film, that is, not the person.
The action movie is written by Underground co-creator Misha Green. The resulting spec script lit up studio eyes last week, with furious bidding ensuing from several parties keen to acquire the thriller. Described by Deadline as “in the vein of The Professional and La Femma Nikita”, and I n a year where Hollywood is finally slowing signs of starting to wake up to its historic lack of female filmmakers (and as Wonder Woman looks to perform strongly at the US box office), the timing is good for a female-driven actioner, particularly one that has been written as a potential starting block for a franchise.
Green’s name attached only makes the project more appealing: the Underground showrunner has just been commissioned to write the pilot for HBO’s new drama, Lovecraft Country. Producing it are some other impressive names, including Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot.
After a heavy round of bidding, Netflix emerged as the victors. A rapid agreement was reached, following another studio’s ticking clock deal, which would have seen the streaming service lose the film if it didn’t sign its own in time. Green will be a producer on the final project, alongside The LEGO Batman Movie’s Roy Lee.
