Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry, Million Dollar Baby, PS I Love You) is heading to Mars for Netflix’s new series Away.
The 10-episode sci-fi drama, which is exec-produced by Cloverfield’s Matt Reeves, is loosely inspired by Chris Jones’ Esquire article of the same name. Announced last year, it’s now found its leading star, with two-time Oscar winner Swank coming aboard to play Emma Green.
An American astronaut, she must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous mission. It is a series about hope, humanity and how we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things.
Jessica Goldberg (The Path) will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Swank will also serve as an executive producer on the series, alongside Ed Zwick (Nashville, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, The Last Samurai), who will direct the first episode, and Andrew Hinderaker, who will write the first episode; and Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood), who will also serve as writer. Other EPs include Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield, Felicity), Adam Kassan, Michelle Lee (episode 101 only), and Jeni Mulein (for episodes 102-110).
