Chasing Coral arrived on Netflix worldwide this weekend, as Jeff Orlowski follows his Oscar-nominated Chasing Ice with an eye-opening documentary about the devastating impact climate change is having upon coral reefs.

Orlowski’s 2012 gem (also on Netflix UK) was nominated for Best Original Song, for its closing credits track Before My Time, composed by J. Ralph. That was sung for the film by Scarlett Johansson. Earlier this year, Netflix and Chasing Coral recruited Kristen Bell to do the same for its own closing song, Tell Me How Low, written by Dan Romer and Teddy Geiger.

“Where Chasing Ice concluded with a tragic sense of loss, Chasing Coral chooses to end on a more uplifting note of hope,” we wrote in our review of the film at Sundance London. “‘Tell me how long till we wake up,’ asks the song over the end credits, co-written by Beasts of the Southern Wild’s Dan Romer, who composes the movie’s gorgeous, moving score with Saul Simon MacWilliams.”

Kristen Bell to sing Chasing Coral’s closing song

Kristen Bell will sing the closing song for Netflix documentary Chasing Coral.

The film, directed by Jeff Orlowski, is a follow-up to Chasing Ice, the Oscar-nominated film about one man’s effort to capture melting glaciers on camera to prove global warming is an urgent threat. Chasing Coral carries out a similar mission, following a self-proclaimed coral nerd, top-notch camera designers, and renowned marine biologists, as they invent the first time-lapse camera to record coral bleaching events as they happen.

Orlowski’s 2012 gem (also on Netflix UK) was nominated for Best Original Song, for its closing credits track Before My Time, composed by J. Ralph. That was sung for the film by Scarlett Johansson, giving the end credits an emotional impact and a star wattage that presumably helped in its awards campaigning.

Now, Chasing Coral is taking a similar tact, with Frozen star Kristen Bell to record its closing credits song.

Written by Dan Romer and Teddy Geiger, the song is a rousing plea about the climate crisis and the devastating phenomenon silently raging underwater.

Bell will record a new version of the song for its worldwide release, which will be on Netflix on Friday 14th July.

“I was moved and inspired by Chasing Coral and its message of hope for our planet’s future,” says the actress. “I feel a responsibility to care for the Earth in whatever way I can, and I was honoured to lend my voice to the original song. As we strive to make a better world for our children, I hope this film will ignite real action in advancing climate solutions in our global communities.”
