Amazon is doubling down on its genre programming with two new series on the way from two fan favourites.
Comic book creator Jonathan Hickman and The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman are teaming up to develop two new series based on Hickman’s graphic novels, Transhuman and East of West.
Transhuman is a sci-fi drama set in the near future. It follows a divorced couple who run major corporations, each one offering people the chance to enhance themselves genetically or robotically.
East of West is a dystopian Western, set in a future where America has become divided into seven nations. It follows Death, as he tries to save his mortal family from the apocalypse in a world of riders, monsters and corrupt gunslingers.
Kirkman, who signed an exclusive first-look deal with Amazon Studios last year, will exec-produce both projects through his production company Skybound Entertainment.
Hickman, whose CV includes The Avengers, Secret Wars and the Fantastic Four, will be a fellow exec-producer, alongside Nick Dragotta and J.M. Ringuet, the artists on Hickman’s Image Comics books. East of West will be written for the screen by Hickman, reports Deadline, which broke the news of the projects, but another writer is reportedly being sought to adapt Transhuman.
Skybound’s Alpert, Sean Furst and Bryan Furst will also exec-produce the projects, with Josh Adler (Stash House) additionally on board as an EP for Transhuman.
“Nick, J.M. and I couldn’t be more excited to be working with Skybound and Amazon,” said Hickman in a statement. “We feel very strongly about each project and couldn’t be more appreciative of how far both companies have gone to make us feel welcome. We look forward to doing the work and hopefully doing it well.”
