The first photos from Black Mirror Season 4 are beaming their way to us from Netflix – and Jesse Plemons is bolding going full Captain Kirk in USS Callister.
Charlie Brooker has spoken before about potentially doing a space-set episode of the warped anthology series, and Season 4 of Black Mirror looks set to finally deliver on that promise. Directed by Toby Haynes (Dr Who, Sherlock), USS Callister is written by Brooker and William Bridges, with a cast that includes Cristin Milioti (The Wolf of Wall Street, Fargo), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld, House of Cards) and Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum, Monsters: Dark Continent), as well as Plemons. Judging by this new picture of the cast, they’re all gamely getting into the spoof Star Trek vibe, with blue make-up, tight costumes and sickly yellow tops.
The photo has been released by Netflix today alongside a picture of Arkangel, which is directed by Jodie Foster and stars Rosemarie Dewitt (La La Land, Mad Men), Brenna Harding (A Place to Call Home) and Owen Teague (Bloodline).
That episode centres on a mother and daughter relationship, and has “more got the tone of an indie movie, an indie drama”, Brooker said in an interview earlier this year.
Indeed, this is season where Black Mirror looks set to depart from its typically grim tone for something more varied.
“We’ve got one that’s overtly comic, much more overtly comic than anything we’ve done,” he added. “It’s got fairly mainstream comic elements, but also some really unpleasant stuff that happens. I haven’t even seen the rough cut of it yet.”
“I do think that at the moment, as we’re doing new episodes, there’s a limit to how much constant nihilistic bleakness I can take,” he commented. “And the world is in a place at the moment where I think maybe people appreciate things that aren’t so unremittingly horrible. But you also don’t want to short-change people on the unremitting horribleness.”
