Amazon’s Hanna series set for 29th March premiere
David Farnor | On 14, Feb 2019
Amazon’s Hanna TV series finally has a release date, and a new trailer gives us our first proper look at what to expect.
Based on Joe Wright’s 2011 film, the eight-episode first season was written by David Farr (The Night Manager), who co-wrote the original feature. Produced by NBCUniversal International Studios, Working Title Television and Amazon Studios, and directed by Sarah Adina Smith (Legion), the series was filmed entirely on-location in Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Morocco, Spain and the UK. While building on the driving action-conspiracy narrative of his feature script, Farr has also re-imagined Hanna’s world for the small-screen with added intimacy, building a portrait of a young woman learning about – and experiencing – for the first time what it is to be female in the modern world.
Raised in total seclusion in the remote woods of Eastern Europe, 15-year-old Hanna (Esmé Creed-Miles – Mister Lonely) has spent her entire young life training to fight those who hunt her and her mercenary father, Erik Heller (Joel Kinnaman – The Killing). Her survivalist skills are finally tested when she and Erik are separated upon their discovery by a rogue CIA operative, Marissa Wiegler (Mireille Enos – reuniting with her The Killing co-star) and her team of agents.
Hanna has no choice but to embark on a perilous journey alone across Europe as she seeks to reunite with her father and evade – and ultimately take down – the dangerous agents who target them. Hanna’s isolated upbringing leads her to face particularly daunting physical and emotional challenges along the way, as she navigates an ever-deepening conspiracy – one that could be the undoing of both her and her father.
The series has been slated for a March release for some time, with Amazon briefly releasing the first episode for 24 hours following this year’s Super Bowl. Now, we finally know when the series will arrive on Amazon Prime Vido: at the TCAs in Los Angeles last night, Prime Video announced that Hannah will launch all-at-once on 29th March. Here’s the new trailer:

Amazon to debut Hanna TV series after Super Bowl
31st January 2019
Amazon will be dropping its new TV series Hanna right after this year’s Super Bowl.
The big game has long been a magnet for film and TV, with the competition now extremely fierce just to get the most talked-about trailer during half-time. Last year, though, Netflix turned the game from a preview showcase to a launchpad, and released The Cloverfield Paradox immediately after the match ended – a surprise release that whipped up a whole storm of publicity for a film that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.
This year, Amazon is following a similar playbook, and will drop the first episode of its new thriller on Amazon Prime Video for 24 hours after the 2019 Super Bowl – ahead of the full season’s release in March.
The series is based on Joe Wright’s 2011 film of the same name, which featured Saoirse Ronan, and follows the journey of “an extraordinary young girl as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is”. Esme Creed-Miles will play Hanna, with Joel Kinnaman co-starring as Hanna’s father, a hardened soldier and mercenary, who raised his daughter in the wooded outskirts of Poland, isolated from the world and dedicated to teaching her how to fight and survive. Mireille Enos, meanwhile, will play Marissa, a ruthless agent who has risen up the ranks of the CIA and is hunting down Hanna.
Produced by NBCUniversal International Studios, the show is written by David Farr (The Night Manager) and has been setting a stylish, action-packed tone with its teasers to date. Now, we’ve got a full trailer to go with the Super Bowl news, accompanied by the Smashing Pumpkins track Bullet With Butterfly Wings covered by Karen O. Here’s the video:
Episode 1 of Hanna is available to watch exclusively on Amazon Prime Video for 24 hours following the 2019 Super Bowl.
Amazon unveils new teaser for Hanna TV series
18th January 2019
Now that 2019 is officially here, Amazon’s Hanna TV series is drawing closer, and the online giant is stepping up its marketing machine accordingly, with a new teaser for the show.
Joel Kinnaman, Mireille Enos and Esme Creed-Miles will star in the thriller, based on Joe Wright’s 2011 film of the same name, which featured Saoirse Ronan. Produced by NBCUniversal International Studios, the show is written by David Farr (The Night Manager), and follows the journey of “an extraordinary young girl as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is”.
Esme Creed-Miles will play Hanna, with Kinnaman co-starring as Hanna’s father, a hardened soldier and mercenary, who raised his daughter in the wooded outskirts of Poland, isolated from the world and dedicated to teaching her how to fight and survive. Enos, meanwhile, will play Marissa, a ruthless agent who has risen up the ranks of the CIA and is hunting down Hanna.
We still don’t know a confirmed release date, but with March only a matter of weeks away, each new trailer gives us a better sense of the show’s tone and style, and things are looking very stylish indeed. Here’s the video:
First look: Amazon’s Hanna TV series set for March release
20th December 2018
Amazon’s new TV series Hanna will premiere this March, and a new teaser for the series gives us our first look at the show in action.
Joel Kinnaman, Mireille Enos and Esme Creed-Miles will star in the series, based on Joe Wright’s 2011 thriller, which featured Saoirse Ronan as a young girl trained to be an assassin trying to reunite with her dad. Produced by NBCUniversal International Studios, this new series based on the movie is written by David Farr (The Night Manager), and follows the journey of “an extraordinary young girl as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is”.
Enos and Kinnaman are no strangers, of course, having starred together in the US remake of The Killing. Kinnaman is front and centre of the first teaser for the show, as we see his father apparently conducting a baby heist to take his daughter away from the world. While we don’t see more than that, it’s a slick, moody video that sets the tone for the series. It also gives us a glimpse of the show’s title treatment and confirms that the show will premiere on Amazon Prime Video in March 2019, although an exact date is not yet known.

Joel Kinnaman, Mireille Enos and Esme Creed-Miles to star in Amazon’s Hanna series
10th February 2018
Joel Kinnaman, Mireille Enos and Esme Creed-Miles have signed on to star in Amazon’s new TV series Hanna, based on Joe Wright’s 2011 thriller.
The film, which starred Saoirse Ronan as a young girl trained to be an assassin trying to reunite with her dad, proved a stylish, thrilling vehicle for both the Atonement director and actress. Now, Amazon is bringing it to the small screen, courtesy of NBCUniversal International Studios, who most recently gave us the Taken TV series. David Farr, who co-wrote the original film, will pen the series, working alongside NBC’s LA scripted team, headed up by JoAnn Alfano, and Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein, who produced the 2011 film, and Becky Clements.
Part high-concept action and part coming-of-age tale, Hanna the series will follow the journey of “an extraordinary young girl as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is”.
Esme Creed-Miles, who will soon be seen in the excellent Dark River, will play Hanna. She’ll be joined by Kinnaman, fresh from his starring role in Netflix’s big budget sci-fi Altered Carbon. Kinnaman will play Hannah’s father, a hardened soldier and mercenary, who raised his daughter in the wooded outskirts of Poland, isolated from the world and dedicated to teaching her how to fight and survive. Enos, meanwhile, will play Marissa, a ruthless agent who has risen up the ranks of the CIA and is hunting down Hanna, who, in a bid for freedom, turns into an unleashed killing machine.
The show marks a reunion between Enos and Kinnaman, who have previously starred together the US remake of Danish series The Killing. In the original movie, their roles were played by Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett.
“I’m thrilled that Hanna has managed to attract a visionary director and actors of the caliber of Mireille and Joel to play our adult leads,” Farr says. “And in Esme Creed-Miles I believe we have discovered a star of the future – she is going to be a very special Hanna. Hanna aims to be both a raw-knuckle ride and a deeply touching family drama. It has the visceral excitement of a genuine conspiracy thriller but also the simple humanity of a rites-of-passage drama. Hanna is in a very unusual family. She’s a very special teenager. But all teenagers think they’re abnormal. She’s just a little more abnormal than most.”
Alfano adds: “It is fantastic to bring together David Farr’s masterful storytelling with the exceptional talents of Enos, Kinnaman, Creed-Miles and Smith. We have the ideal team for crafting an intelligent and uniquely entertaining series that deftly combines thriller, teenaged rite-of-passage story, family drama and action-packed adventure.”
Production on the show is expected to begin this March in the UK, Spain, Hungary and Slovakia.
Hanna TV series headed to Amazon
25th May 2017
Amazon has commissioned a new TV series based on the 2011 flick Hanna.
The film, which starred Saoirse Ronan as a young girl trained to be an assassin trying to reunite with her dad, was directed by Joe Wright and proved a stylish, thrilling vehicle for both the Atonement director and actress. Six years on, Amazon Studios is hoping to recapture some of that offbeat thrill on the small screen.
The show will be produced by NBCUniversal International Studios, who most recently gave us a flawed TV series based on Liam Neeson franchise Taken. Hanna’s series, though, has one secret weapon that did not: screenwriter David Farr. Farr, who co-wrote the original film, most recently penned the BBC/AMC series The Night Manager, putting him in a reassuringly strong position to tackle this adaptation. Farr has been developing the project with NBC’s LA scripted team, headed up by JoAnn Alfano, and Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein, who produced the 2011 film, and Becky Clements.
Part high-concept action and part coming-of-age tale, Hanna the series will follow the journey of “an extraordinary young girl as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is”.
“I am delighted to be able to return to the Hanna story. Joe Wright’s movie was dazzling but inevitably there were certain elements that a feature length film wasn’t able fully to explore,” said Farr in a statement. “It’s a pleasure therefore to be able to revisit the material in a longer format and take Hanna into whole new physical and emotional worlds. Amazon have shown such passion for the project and is the perfect home for Hanna.”
“From the moment JoAnn Alfano and I saw Hanna it was evident that the film would make an incredible TV series,” added Michael Adelstein, President of NBCUniversal International Studios. “Fortunately, David Farr felt there was more Hanna story to tell and wanted to revisit this extraordinary world. We’re excited to be in business with David, Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements who share our passion for this compelling story. The team at Amazon have been incredibly supportive and we are delighted this show will air on a platform that continues to generate exceptional content.”
Adelstein and Clements will exec-produce the show, alongside Alfaro and Scott Nemes for NBCUniversal, with Scott Herbst and Tom Coan on board as co-EPs.
