It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia renewed for four more seasons
David Farnor | On 13, Dec 2020
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been officially renewed for a record four more seasons.
The comedy, produced by FX Productions, centres on the misguided dreams and blundered schemes of the gang at Paddy’s Pub: Mac (McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson) and Frank (Danny DeVito). The series is exec produced by McElhenney, Howerton, Day, Michael Rotenberg, Nick Frenkel, Tom Lofaro, Scott Marder and David Hornsby.
Together they have crafted something dark and hilarious enough to become a veritable TV sensation, with FX double-renewing the show in 2018 for a 13th and 14th season. Earlier this year, a 15th run was confirmed, but now, FX has confirmed that it has, in fact, commissioned four more seasons – taking the show all the way to 18 seasons. That makes it the longest running live-action sitcom in TV history, four seasons longer than the prior record holder, Ozzy and Harriet.
The new was made as part of Disney’s Investor Day event this week.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia renewed for Season 15
28th May 2020
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will officially return for a record 15th season, FX has announced.
The sitcom, which airs on Netflix in the UK, follows the antics of Mac (Rob McElhenney), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Frank (Danny DeVito) and Dennis (Glenn Howerton). Their hyperactive performances, the show’s dark sense of humour and its willingness to brave shocking topics has made it a veritable TV phenomenon, with FX giving a double-season order back in 2018 for Season 13 and 14.
With Season 14 now on Netflix UK, FX has already commissioned another 15th run, which takes the show past ABC’s The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet to become the longest-running live-action comedy series.
Creator, executive producer and star Rob McElhenney, who has recently debuted his own Apple TV+ series Mythic Quest: Raven’s Quest, recently revealed that writing on Season 15 has already begun. Now, it’s official that a 15th run is on the way.
It’s Always Sunny Season 13 arrives on Netflix UK this January
12th December 2018
Update: January 2020. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 14 is now available on Netflix UK.
When is It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 13 released on Netflix UK? That’s the question we’re getting asked a lot as the end of 2018 approaches and people crave their latest hit of sitcom depravity. There’s good news and there’s bad news. The bad news is it won’t be arriving before Christmas. The good news? You’ve got less than a month to wait.
Yes, it’s not long to go until we finally catch up with the antics of Mac (Rob McElhenney), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Frank (Danny DeVito) and Dennis (Glenn Howerton). Season 13 proves unlucky for some, with mystery surrounding whether Dennis would return before the run was broadcast in the USA – as per the end of Season 12, Dennis was officially heading to North Dakota to take on the new role of father (in real life, Howerton headed to NBC’s A.P. Bio, which was renewed for a second season)
“Even without Dennis Reynolds, the Gang has its hands full as Charlie hopes to have a child with The Waitress, Mac sets out to understand his newfound sexuality, Dee takes feminism to new heights, and Frank goes to great lengths for the Gang to experience the greatest moment in Philadelphia sports history – an Eagles Super Bowl victory,” is how the official synopsis put it.
Now, Netflix has confirmed that the New Year will bring us all the answers we need about what happens to the gang and whether Dennis makes his return: Season 13 will premiere on Netflix UK on 6th January 2019.
Until then, here’s a full trailer teasing everything from sexual harassment and haircuts to making a doll of Dennis and… wait, you know what, we probably don’t want to know what they’ll do with that.
Season 1 to 13 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
First look: It’s Always Sunny Season 13
16th July 2018
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will return this September in the US, and we’ve now got our first look at the new season.
FX has already renewed the comedy through to Season 4, a display of just how much confidence it has in the depraved antics of Mac (Rob McElhenney), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Frank (Danny DeVito) and Dennis (Glenn Howerton). After 12 seasons, the cast promise they still have new stories to tell – with the first trailer of the show’s return even promising exactly that. For Season 13, the biggest story looks to involve Dennis, as the mystery surrounding whether he will return remains only half-solved.
The official Season 13 synopsis says that “The Gang Returns… mostly”, as Mac, Charlie, Dee and Frank go back to duplicitous, scheming ways at Paddy’s Pub, while Dennis takes on the new role of father in North Dakota. That was how Season 12 left it, with Dennis heading out of time – while, in real life, Howerton heads to NBC’s A.P. Bio, which was renewed for a second season.
With Dennis expected to have a limited role in the new season, the synopsis continues: “Even without Dennis Reynolds, the Gang has its hands full as Charlie hopes to have a child with The Waitress, Mac sets out to understand his newfound sexuality, Dee takes feminism to new heights, and Frank goes to great lengths for the Gang to experience the greatest moment in Philadelphia sports history – an Eagles Super Bowl victory.”
Season 13 will premiere on FX in the US on 5th September, with no confirmation yet on when they will arrive on Netflix UK, which has the exclusive rights to the programme on British soil. Watch this space for more than that – and, in the meantime, read on for the trailer:
