MUBI’s On Body and Soul wins at 2017 EFAs

MUBI’s On Body and Soul has come Home triumphant from the 2017 European Film Awards.
The EFAs, which were live-streamed this weekend on Curzon Home Cinema, we’re dominated by The Square. The Cannes Palme d’Or winner sweeper the board, bagging the prize for Best European Film, Best Actor, Best Script as Best Director for Ruben Ostlund.
“We wanted to say something important, but we also wanted it to be entertaining and exciting – I think it’s part of a European approach,” Ostlund said, upon also receiving the prize for Best European Comedy.
Alexandra Borbely, though, emerged as the winner in the hotly contested Best Actress category, thanks to her performance in On Body and Soul. The drama, which marks a comeback to feature filmmaking for director Ildikó Enyedi, follows two introverted people, both workers in a meat-processing plant, who find out by chance that they share the same dream every night. The movie was snapped up exclusively by subscription streaming service MUBI earlier this year.
Borbely beat Isabelle Huppert (Happy End) and Juliette Binoche (Bright Sunshine In), Paula Beer (Frantz) and Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth) to bag the prize.l William Oldroyd’s Lady Macbeth, though, didn’t go home empty-handed, winning the European Discovery Award, its second haul of the weekend, with the period costume drama also sweeping the board at the British Independent Film Awards. Other winners included the EFA People’s Choice Award going to Maria Shrader’s Stefan Zweig – Farewell to Europe, and Best Editing going to Robin Campillo’s BPM (Beats Per Minute). A lifetime achievement award also went to Julie Delpy.
