“When in the world have you been and how did you get here?” That’s the question the Boudelaires face as the New Year begins, and it’s a question with no easy answer – after all, there have already been two seasons of A Series of Unfortunate Events, before the Baudelaire orphans return to our screens.
Now in their third and final outing, Netflix’s final adaptation of the best-selling books by Lemony Snicket wraps up the tragic tale of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, whose evil guardian, Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris), will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. The siblings must outsmart him at every turn, foiling his many devious plans, while uncovering the mystery behind their parents’ mysterious death.
“Dark, inventive and gloriously over the top, A Series of Unfortunate Events is still one of the best Netflix originals,” we wrote in our review of Season 2, so it was no surprise that Netflix ordered one more run, based on the last four books (The Slippery Slope, The Grim Grotto, The Penultimate Peril, and The End) in Snicket’s saga.
Now, that third and final run is upon us, as we finally find out the fate of the Baudelaires and the meaning of the letters “VFD”. We pick up as the Baudelaire orphans – Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes), and Sunny Baudelaire (Presley Smith) – continue to elude the clutches of Olaf, while finding out more about the secret organisation that has always been a part of their lives.
Season 3 premieres on Netflix on 1st January 2019. Here’s the final trailer:

A Series of Unfortunate Events: First look at Season 3
28th October 2018
The end is nigh for A Series of Unfortunate Events, and thanks to a new bunch of photos released by Netflix, we have our first look at what the final season of the kids’ adventure will look like.
Based on the internationally best-selling series of books by Lemony Snicket and starring Emmy and Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris, A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans – Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – whose evil guardian, Count Olaf, will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. The siblings must outsmart him at every turn, foiling his many devious plans, while uncovering the mystery behind their parents’ mysterious death.
“Dark, inventive and gloriously over the top, A Series of Unfortunate Events is still one of the best Netflix originals,” we wrote in our review of Season 2, so it was no surprise that Netflix ordered one more run, based on the final four books (The Slippery Slope, The Grim Grotto, The Penultimate Peril, and The End) in Lemony Snicket’s saga.
The new pictures give us a look at their final adventures, from the moment where they get stuck underwater in a submarine to the point when Carmelita Spats (Kitana Turnbull) dresses up like a tap-dancing fairy vet. We also get a look at Allison Williams as Kit, the sister of Lemony Snicket (Patrick Warburton). Oh, and there’s Esme Squalor (Lucy Punch) wearing some uber-fashionable tentacles.
“Those tentacles you’re seeing are actually inflatable,” showrunnner Barry Sonnenfeld told EW, who first published the pictures. “They were designed and inflated so that they would be erect like that and not just flopped down. They were horribly squeaky.”
Sonnenfeld also described Season 3 as “the most emotional season yet”, with “a lot of action, and the kids have become much more proactive and less victims”.
The ending may also be more satisfying than the books, he added, with the show’s writers and Snicket author Daniel Handler collaborating to craft an ending that expands on the books, while remaining true to them.
“When you see The End, you’ll think that it’s what Daniel always had in mind, though it’s not,” said Sonnenfeld. “It wraps up in such a strong way that you may think we came up with the idea at the beginning of the first season.”
