What’s leaving Sky and NOW TV in August / September 2018?
David Farnor | On 23, Aug 2018
As summer draws to a close, it’s also time for the sun to set on some of Sky and NOW’s best TV shows and movies, as their rights expire and they depart from the streaming ether.
Sky’s box set collection is bidding farewell to The Jinx: The Life and Deaths and Robert Durst, The Leftovers, House, Flight of the Concords, Get Shorty and Nashville.
Sky Cinema, meanwhile, is waving goodbye to a diverse array of movies, from Moon and Zodiac to Monsters University and Poster: Never Stop Never Stopping.
Whichever you subscribe to, this coming month is your last chance to stream the following:
Movies
Moon – 16th September
Duncan Jones’ sci-fi stars Sam Rockwell and, well, that’s essentially it, as his astronaut remains stuck in isolation on a moon base with only himself for company. A study of identity, humanity and home, this low-budget gem is a modern genre classic.
Zodiac – 31st August
David Fincher’s slow-burn thriller about the infamous serial killer and the hunt to work out his identity is a painstakingly constructed masterpiece fuelled by superb performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo, mystery, fear and obsession.
The Prestige – 31st August
Christopher Nolan’s magical drama boasts a twisting plot, stunning effects and, more importantly, cracking performances from an ensemble that includes Michael Caine, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall and the late David Bowie.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping – 31st August
Andy Samberg’s pop music satire is side-splittingly hilarious, and comes with an equally inspired Lonely Island soundtrack. The result isn’t just your new favourite comedy: it’s your new favourite album.
Monsters University – 10th September
This prequel to Monsters, Inc., follows Mike and Sully back in the days before they met, as each one enrols in Monsters University to learn how to scare people.

TV
The Jinx: The Life and Deaths and Robert Durst – 28th August
HBO’s six-part documentary, directed and produced by Andrew Jarecki and produced and shot by Marc Smerling, exposes long-buried information discovered during a seven-year investigation of a series of unsolved crimes, and the man at their centre: Robert Durst, scion of New York’s billionaire Durst family.
Long suspected in the 1982 disappearance of his young wife in New York, the 2000 murder of the key witness in the case in Beverly Hills, and the subsequent murder and dismemberment of a neighbour in Texas, Durst has consistently maintained his innocence.
If you liked Serial or Making a Murderer, you’ll love this.
The Leftovers: Season 1 – 28th August
Profound, provocative and perfectly performed, HBO’s drama about the people left behind when a small percentage of the world’s population unexpectedly disappear is one of the best TV shows of the last 20 years.
House: Season 1 to 8 – 29th August
At the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey, prickly genius Dr Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) channels his inner Sherlock Holmes as he attempts to solve a host of complex medical mysteries, all the while playing mind games with colleagues.
Psychoville: Season 1 to 2 – 31st August
Before Inside No.9 and after The League of Gentlemen came this horror/comedy series about a group of strangers united by a mysterious string of threatening letters – including one of the best clowns you’ve ever seen on screen. (Watch out for Daniel Kaluuya in a small role.)
Game Of Thrones: Season 1 to 6 – 31st August
Don’t miss the chance to catch up with the first six seasons of this epic fantasy, based on the books by George RR Martin.
Flight Of The Conchords: Season 2 – 5th September
New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk parody duo, Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement, remain as funny now as they were when they first arrived on our screens, with their unique blend of witty lyrics, note-perfect pastiches and extreme Kiwi politeness.
Get Shorty: Season 1 – 7th September
Based on Elmore Leonard’s novel and the hit movie of the same name, Get Shorty the TV series follows Miles Daly (Chris O’Dowd), who works as muscle for a murderous crime ring in Nevada. For the sake of his daughter, he attempts to change professions and become a movie producer, laundering money through a Hollywood film. But instead of leaving the criminal world behind, he accidently brings it with him to Los Angeles.
Nashville: Season 6 – 9th September
Take a toe-tapping trip to America’s Deep South with this compelling country music drama starring Friday Night Lights’ Connie Britton and Heroes’ Hayden Panettiere.
Boardwalk Empire: Season 5 – 12th September
Don’t miss the chance to catch the fifth and final season of HBO’s dazzling gangster epic.
False Flag: Season 1 – 13th September
This superb Israeli drama revolves around five ordinary Israeli citizens who discover one morning via the media that they are the principal suspects of the high-profile kidnapping of the Iranian minister of defence during his visit to Moscow. The unceasing news coverage turns their lives upside down and their attempts to deny their involvement are in vain. The Mossad and the Israeli government leave them to deal with it on their own instead of providing protection and it’s not long before even their closest friends begin to distrust them.
