What’s leaving Netflix UK in June / July 2017?
David Farnor | On 17, Jun 2017
Summer. A time of sunshine, ice cream, strawberries and running to the nearest beach. Unless, that is, you’ve always wanted to watch that fascinating film from Paul Schrader and Lindsay Lohan or been meaning to get around to seeing The Skeleton Twins. As June draws to a close, with July swiftly replacing it, those, along with a number of other worthwhile watches, are about to depart Netflix UK, as their rights expire – this is your last chance to stream the following:
The Canyons – 19th June
This infamous film from Paul Schrader and Brett Easton Ellis and starring Lindsay Lohan is a fascinating, flawed movie, one that’s seldom enjoyable to watch but interesting to talk about simply because of the circumstances surrounding its existence – the backstory behind The Canyons would probably make a better film than the film itself. (Read our full review.)
The End of the Tour – 22nd June
James Ponsoldt’s drama about an epic interview between David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel) and journalist David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) for Rolling Stone is an unconventional, absorbing, poignant drama.
The Skeleton Twins – 22nd June
Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig join forces for this underrated comedy drama about two suicidal siblings.
The Life of Birds – 14th July
David Attenborough takes to the skies for a typically mesmerising nature documentary series.
Clouds of Sils Maria – 26th June
Kristin Stewart steals the show from Juliette Binoche in this well acted drama from director Olivier Assayas, which sees a veteran actress come face-to-face with an uncomfortable reflection of herself when she agrees to take part in a revival of the play that launched her career 20 years earlier.
45 Years – 29th June
Andrew Haigh’s drama about an elderly couple – Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling – plays out more like a horror story than a romance, as husband Geoff receives a letter out o the blue informing him that the body of a former girlfriend has been found, after falling off a mountain in The Alps 50 years ago. The powerful movie earned its leading lady a deserved Oscar nomination.
The Gift – 29th June
Joel Edgerton’s psychological thriller, starring Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall, is a gripping and endlessly surprising gem.
Foxcatcher – 29th June
Channing Tatum delivers a knock-out performance as real life wrestler Mark Schultz, who is taken under the wing of Steve Carrell’s eccentric millionaire, John du Pont. Supported by Mark Ruffalo as Mark’s generous older brather, director Bennett Miller captures the shifting power balance of the trio with a chilling detachment.
Limitless – 30th June
Bradley Cooper is perfectly cast in this smart thriller about a writer who discovers a drug that allows him to use all of his brain. Cooper brings an irresistible charm to the perfect pill-popper and a sympathetic desperation to the sober loser, while director Neil Burger and DoP Jo Willems (The Hunger Games) have a whale of a time with the visuals.
Whiplash – 30th June
A music student determined to be the best drummer of all time (Miles Teller) is pushed to his limits by a sadistic teacher (J.K. Simmons). The result is a riveting drama that has the toe-tapping style of jazz and the exhilarating thrill of an action movie.
Timbuktu – 9th July
No matter how many reports we see on the news, it’s hard for us to imagine what life must be like under the rule of Islamic militants. It’s even harder to imagine what it must be like for the militants themselves. Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu, impressively, manages to show us both.
The Theory of Everything – 10th July
Eddie Redmayne transforms completely for this turn as Stephen Hawking in James Marsh’s moving biopic.
