What’s leaving Netflix UK in February / March 2019?
David Farnor | On 16, Feb 2019
Two months down and 2019 shows no sign of slowing up – which means you need to be even more alert to time slipping through your fingers, especially when it comes to films and TV shows disappearing from your favourite subscription platform. This February and March, that means it’s time to bid farewell to moving Oscar contenders, gripping horror mysteries and one of the funniest films of the last decade. This is your last chance to stream the following:
Hacksaw Ridge – 22nd February
Andrew Garfield delivers a superbly heartfelt performance in this moving film about WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa but refused to kill people. Read our full review
My Old Lady – 22nd February
Kevin Kline and Kristin Scott Thomas deliver excellent turns in this spiky drama that tackles big questions with humour, pathos and understated maturity.
Identity – 23rd February
John Cusack and Ray Liotta star in this underrated psychological thriller that sees strangers gather together at a motel – only for people to start getting bumped off.
Atonement – 28th February
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping – 1st March
Andy Samberg’s pop music satire is side-splittingly hilarious, and comes with an equally inspired Lonely Island soundtrack. The result isn’t just your new favourite comedy: it’s your new favourite album.
Calvary – 1st March
“Killing a priest on a Sunday. That’ll be a good one.” That’s an unknown congregation member to Father James (Brendan Gleeson) one day in the confession box. Told he has one week to get his house in order, the priest finds himself facing death – for the price of other people’s sins. Blackly funny and movingly sincere, the result is a powerful story of a decent man coming to terms with his own mortality. Killing a bad priest? That’s nothing. Killing a good priest? That really does stay with you.
Downfall – 1st March
Bruno Ganz’ turn as Adolf Hitler in the final days of WWII have been parodied so many times now that you’d expect Downfall to have lost all impact. The fact that it hasn’t is testimony to Oliver Hirschbiegel’s riveting production and Ganz’ intense performance.
Iron Man – 1st March
Don’t miss your chance to rewatch the whole trilogy before Captain Marvel, as all three Iron Man films blast off from the service on the same day.
Season of the Witch – 1st March
“We’re going to need more holy water!” Nic Cage goes old testament in this tale of a knight with beautiful flowing locks facing a young woman (played by Claire Foy) who may or may not be a witch. Big swords, bad wolves and Hellboy headbutting a demon? Swashbuckling and witch-burning is what some people want from cinema. And by heck does this give it to them. With wings on. Big, rubbish CGI wings. And claws.
The Edge of Seventeen – 2nd March
Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) and Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) are inseparable best friends attempting to navigate high school together… until Nadine’s older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) and Krista begin dating.
Gattaca – 2nd March
Andrew Niccol has long been one of the most interesting filmmakers working in science fiction and Gattaca is a perfect example. The film, set in the near future, stars the always-excellent Ethan Hawke as Vincent, a man who is genetically flawed, something that prevents him from being sent into space. His solution? Buying the genes of a genetically perfect man (Jude Law) to join the Gattaca program.
Being John Malkovich – 12th March
A lowly puppeteer takes a job as a file clerk in an office, only to discover a mysterious portal that transports a person into the mind of actor John Malkovich, only to be spit out alongside the New Jersey Turnpike fifteen minutes later.
