What’s leaving Netflix UK in August / September 2017?
David Farnor | On 15, Aug 2017
With August in full swing, using the “s” word always threatens to spoil the mood, but September is lurking on the blue horizon, just waiting to come along and herald the arrival of autumn. Staying indoors, then, might seem even more foolish than normal during the summer, but if you go outside, you risk missing out on a couple of gems. (And Fifty Shades of Grey.)
This is your last chance to stream the following on Netflix UK:
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2 – 15th August
The franchise based on Stephanie Meyer’s novels reaches a surprisingly epic conclusion, as the movies smartly depart from the page for a finale that’s part X-Men, part trash and all kinds of entertaining.
A Man for All Seasons – 16th August
Robert Bolt turned his stage play into an Oscar-winning drama back in the 1960s, as he brought us the tale of Sir Thomas Moore, Lord Chancellor to Henry VIII, who refused to grant the annulment of the king’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon. The epitome of British historical drama, this is an irrefutable classic.
Fifty Shades of Grey – 19th August
Sam Taylor-Johnson directs this adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic drama about the sadomasochistic relationship between college graduate Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) and businessman Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan).
Blackhat – 21st August
The word “cyber-thriller” sounds as dated as it can get, but Michael Mann’s film, which stars Chris Hemsworth as a hacker released from jail by the FBI to help track down another, more dangerous, keyboard-baser, feels grippingly modern thanks to its cool, digital direction.
Kingsman: The Secret Service – 23rd August
Taron Egerton and an impeccably-dressed Colin Firth stars in Matthew Vaughn’s comedy spy thriller, which sees a young tearaway recruited to Britain’s secret secret service, just as a tech genius (Samuel L Jackson) plans to take over the world.
Wolf Hall – 24th August
You’ve either read it or you haven’t. Or, perhaps more likely, you’ve started to read it and never quite managed to finish. But the BBC’s adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s novel is a striking piece of work, which follows Thomas Cromwell’s rise from a servant of Cardinal Wolsey to the king’s right-hand man. Calculating, shrewd and mesmerising, Mark Rylance delivers an award-winning turn in the lead role, while Peter Kosminsky’s direction keeps everything bathed in natural candlelight. The result strips all pageantry out of the usual costume drama cliches. This is the visual equivalent of Mansel’s present tense prose, like watching A Man for All Seasons shot by Michael Mann. Pan’s Labyrinth – 31st August
Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy fairytale horror is a masterpiece bursting with scares, sentiment and stunning imagination.
Searching for Sugar Man – 31st August
Though he faded into obscurity in the U.S., an early ’70s musician known as Rodriguez became a huge hit in South Africa and was widely rumoured to have died. Two obsessed fans set out to learn the man’s true fate.
The Wrestler – 31st August
A return to form for Mickey Rourke and Darren Aronofsky, The Wrestler is a beautifully crafted film.
Chalet Girl – 2nd September
Do not miss this absolute gem of a sports movie, with a charming lead turn by Felicity Jones.
Into the Woods – 3rd September
Meryl Streep, James Corden, Emily Blunt and Chris Pine are among the star-studded cast members of this big screen version of Sondheim’s fairytale musical, which sees a baker and his wife head into the forest to find the ingredients to make an old witch look young and beautiful again.
Chappie – 8th September
Ignore the haters: Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi about a sentient robot is an enjoyable, underrated and thought-provoking blockbuster.
