Seem familiar? This is where you’ve seen the cast of Nasty Baby before
David Farnor | On 30, May 2016
Before it hits DVD, Nasty Baby is released exclusively today on We Are Colony, along with a bundle of digital special features. We take a look at the bevy of familiar faces in the cast, and where it is you might recognise them from…
Kristen Wiig – SNL, Bridesmaids, Diary of a Teenage Girl
Since her days as a Saturday Night Live regular, Kristen Wiig has gone on to experiment with box office hits (Bridesmaids, The Martian), animated comedies (Despicable Me 2, How To Train Your Dragon) and smaller indie fare (Welcome To Me, The Diary of a Teenage Girl). While she’s soon to be seen in the all-female Ghostbusters reboot, some of her most recent roles have showcased her dramatic, as well as comedic, talent. In Nasty Baby, she plays Polly, a young woman whose desire to have a baby isn’t to be quelled, regardless of the tricky circumstances.
Alia Shawkat – Arrested Development
Alia Shawkat earned our affections as Maeby Fünke in the cult favourite Arrested Development, with a stream of sarcastic one-liners. She’s since landed a series of supporting roles in films such as Whip It (also starring Wiig), Ruby Sparks and punk thriller Green Room. With Nasty Baby, she adds the role of producer to her multi-stringed bow and once again proves her immense likeability.
Reg E. Cathey – House of Cards
As Frank Underwood’s go-to-guy for a mean stack of ribs, Freddy has become a fan favourite in House of Cards. In Season 4, he made a surprise and vengeful return, showing us a side of Freddy we’d rarely seen before. Likewise in Nasty Baby, Reg E. Cathey gives a brilliantly unsettling performance as Bishop, a neighbour whose actions become increasingly unpredictable. Not seen House of Cards? Cathey also popped up in Season 4 and 5 of The Wire, serving as Tommy Carcetti’s (Aidan Gillen) right-hand man.
Constance Shulman – Orange Is The New Black
With the latest season of Orange Is The New Black premiering on 17th June, we should expect to see more of Constance Shulman as Yoga Jones, a former marijuana farmer, who accidentally shot a child rather than a deer. Prior to OITNB, her most iconic role was – wait for it – the voice of Patti Mayonnaise in Nickelodeon’s Doug. In Nasty Baby, she has an explosive cameo as Bishop’s girlfriend. In a nice bit of TV trivia, Shulman’s husband plays political doormat Donald Blythe over on House of Cards with Cathey.
Mark Margolis – Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul
Margolis’ CV includes such classics as Scarface, Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, but he’s most recognised from Breaking Bad as mob boss Tio Salamanca. Despite being mute and confined to a wheelchair, Salamanca inspired fear in enemies and audiences alike with his badass bell-ringing. Margolis continues his spate of characterful performances as a member of Nasty Baby’s gay community, and a neighbour with an almost omnipotent presence.
Marsha Stephanie Blake – Orange Is The New Black
Another member of the OITNB family, Blake joined in Season 3 as a new corrections officer at Litchfield. If your eyes are particularly sharp, you might also recognise her from cameos in HBO’s Girls and Happyish. Her scene as Mo’s sister in Nasty Baby is particularly potent in highlighting the stereotypes that face non-nuclear families.
Nasty Baby is available to watch online in the UK on We Are Colony with behind-the-scenes extras. The film is out on DVD and Blu-ray on Monday 13th June.
