What’s coming soon to FilmStruck UK in October 2018?
David Farnor | On 29, Sep 2018
FilmStruck brings one of the best horror films of recent years to UK subscribers this October, just in time for Halloween. But it’s not just Taika Waititi’s vampiric treat heading your way, as FilmStruck dives into a whole heap of modern classics, from 13 Assassins and Fish Tank to Winter’s Bone and Timbuktu – although there’s still time for older gems, from Lift to the Scaffold to an Agnes Varda retrospective.
Here’s what’s coming soon to FilmStruck UK in October 2018:
13 Assassins – 1st October
Seven Samurai with attitude? Home Alone with swords? Takashi Miike’s violent film is bloody fantastic.
Fish Tank – 1st October
This 2009 film sees 15 year old Mia get a little too close to her mum’s boyfriend (Michael Fassbender). Shot in an apartment block with a raw immediacy, it won the Jury Prize at Cannes – announcing Andrea Arnold as one of Britain’s most exciting filmmakers. A free-wheeling, intimate drama that captures the claustrophobia of council flat living, and (like many of Arnold’s films) captures the rolling Essex landscape with the shadow and colour of a Constable painting. Superb.
Lift to the Scaffold – 1st October
Louis Malle’s classic crime film about a wealthy married woman who plans o kill her husband with her lover is accompanied by an impossibly cool score improved by Miles Davis.
Winter’s Bone – 1st October
Jennifer Lawrence delivers a star-making performance in this mystery, which sees a determined Ozark Mountain girl go on a dangerous search for her drug-dealing father, who has skipped bail. Cold and bleak, with a cracking supporting turn from John Hawkes, this is a frostbitten pleasure.
What We Do in the Shadows – 27th October
There’s one thing you need to know about Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s horror comedy, which follows a group of vampire flatmates in Wellington: it’s very, very, very funny.
