With Game of Thrones still airing weekly, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Amazon would put a halt to all of its own originals this May, but there are good omens for the coming month for Prime Video subscriptions – not least because Amazon’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s book is finally arriving on our screens.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Amazon Prime Video UK in May 2019:
Yardie – 1st May
Idris Elba brings style and swagger to his directorial debut, a gangster thriller based on the novel of the same name by Victor Headley.
The Spanish Princess (STARZPLAY) – 5th May
Based on the novels The Constant Princess and The King’s Curse by Philippa Gregory, this royal drama is told uniquely from the point of view of the women, shedding light on a previously untold corner of history: the lives of people of colour, living and working in 16th century London. It stars Charlotte Hope (Allied) as Catherine of Aragon, the strong-willed young Princess of Spain, who has been promised the English throne since she was a child. She arrives in a grey, rain-lashed England with her glorious and diverse court including her ladies-in-waiting, Lina (Stephanie Levi-John, Striking Out) – a Spanish noble of African Iberian descent – and the sweet and free-spirited Rosa (Nadia Parkes). When her husband, Prince Arthur (Angus Imrie, The Kid Who Would Be King), dies suddenly, the throne seems lost to Catherine, until she devises an audacious plan and sets her sights on the new heir, the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry (Ruairi O’Connor, Delicious), who will one day rule as King Henry VIII. Episodes arrive weekly, alongside their US broadcast. A subscription to STARZPLAY costs £4.99 a month for Amazon Prime members, with a 7-day free trial available.
Sneaky Pete: Season 3 – 10th May
Giovanni Ribisi returns for a third time as Marius, a con man who takes cover from his criminal past by assuming the identity of his former prison mate, Pete. As Season 3 begins, Marius himself would like to know who he is. He’s feeling a pull toward the Bernhardt family. But he’s not part of the family. He’s a con-man. The chance to become more like a normal human being is enticing. It also scares him to death.
New Amsterdam: Season 1, Part 2 – 15th May
Based on the best-selling book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer and his fifteen years as Medical Director at the hospital, New Amsterdam stars Ryan Eggold (The Blacklist) as Dr. Max Goodwin, Janet Montgomery (The Romanoffs) as Dr. Lauren Bloom, Freema Agyeman (Doctor Who) as Dr. Helen Sharpe, Jocko Sims (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) as Dr. Floyd Reynolds, Anupam Kher (Silver Linings Playbook) as Dr. Vijay Kapoor and Tyler Labine (StartUp) as Dr. Iggy Frome. After a short break, the final episodes of Season 1 finally arrive.
The French Open (Eurosport Player) – 26th May
From 26th May to 9th June, the world’s best tennis players once more descend upon Roland Garros to complete for the clay court grand slam title. A subscription to Eurosport costs £6.99 a month for Amazon Prime members, with a 7-day free trial available.
Good Omens – 31st May
Amazon Prime Video’s series, based on the beloved book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, sees the armies of Heaven and Hell amassing and The Four Horsemen are ready to ride. And so Aziraphale, an angel, and Crowley, a demon, agree to join forces to find the missing Anti-Christ and to stop the war that will end everything. David Tennant and Michael Sheen star as the duo on a quest to save the world, which they’ve become rather fond of – and judging by everything we’ve seen so far, the omens are very, very good indeed.
